Redemption Review

November 27, 2008

As a TV movie Redemption was fantastic. Even as a television show in today’s market is was great. But on the continuum of 24, where would I place it? The day it most reminds me of is 3, particularly when they were in Mexico. But in terms of entertainment value I have to be honest and put this at the bottom of the pile. But we need to acknowledge that it’s simply not fair to compare 2 hours of television with 24 hours.

I was disappointed that Tom Lennox, Ethan (Bob Gunton), and Juma (Tony Todd) had so little screen time. Frankly the appearance of those three was some of the things I was most looking forward to. I was both surprised and impressed with Robert Carlyle as Carl Benton, I’m almost ready to make my peace with the possibility of him becoming the next Doctor Who – it’s a shame we won’t be seeing more of him in 24 but I understand why the plot required his departure. They need to stop naming guys Carl though, every time I heard his name I kept think of Palmer’s political behind-the-scenes fixer from Day 1. Powers Booth added even more layers to President Daniels than he had in the previous season – in fact more than all his other appearances together. I sincerely hope we see more of him in the coming season.

Many in the 24 production team have come to think of season 7 as a bit of a reboot and I think in that regard this provides a nice bridge. It cleans the palette a little before moving on. It also serves as a bit of a counterpoint. In 24 the non-action was often given such a brief treatment that in a way it was nice to see some of the characters not racing against the clock for awhile – but it didn’t truly feel like 24 until something exploded. I guess I have some of those stereotypical male traits after all, who knew?

I think part of my problem with Redemption is the things I really enjoyed about 24 is the intricate plots, the interesting characters, the technology, and the off-the-wall solutions to problems. Remember in the movie Speed when he talks about and later actually does shoot the hostage? That’s light even for a run of the mill episode of 24 but this movie had very little of that. And I’m not talking about the violence; I’m talking about the creativity. The fact is Jack Bauer’s half of the story could have been a lot of different characters from various franchises or even someone new, there was very little about his plot that only Jack Bauer could think up. The only really holy cow moment was when a bad guy whips out an RPG out of nowhere. That said it helps the overall reality of the show because you can’t be at full throttle all the time.

Although I liked the working title ‘Exile’ much better I guess ‘Redemption’ is somewhat more accurate, if lacking in some subtly. Basically Jack Bauer gets to do some good but for once in a way that people aren’t likely to question his morals, methods, or choices. He gets to be a regular hero for a change. Usually on 24 Jack is constantly in what they call an “impossible situation” generally meaning that there are no clear moral options – whatever you do you have to get ethically dirty but in Redemption everyone can easily get behind everything Jack does.

Meanwhile back in DC it’s all establishing the car and laying some pipe that in the movie itself amounts to nothing. I think my biggest beef with the movie is the lack of closure in the DC plot. 24 is great for giving you at least some closure on some point and yet still giving you something to look forward to but the DC plot didn’t do that, ALL it did was lay track and that was somewhat unsatisfying.

Now all that said I still highly recommend you buy the DVD because it includes the first 17 minutes of Day 7 and it’s FANTASTIC.

Las Vegas Review Bonanza

November 26, 2008

It has been requested that I get all the Vegas reviews out of the way, much like in the past it was requested that I no longer blog about hockey. Ever the populist I will do my best to deliver. My review of James Darren however will receive it’s own separate entry in the days ahead because he was simply so fantastic I’m not about to let him get lost in the shuffle. I was originally going to call this post ‘Review Orgy’ but in retrospect that’s not so G-rated so let the Bonanza begin!

Las Vegas Premium Outlets: Great But Can Be A Time Sinkhole

I really like the company that runs these outlets, there’s a very similar one in Seattle run by the same group that I frequent several times a year when possible. I always gravitate towards the Kenneth Cole store personally and I have yet to go to an outlet run by this group and not buy something from Kenneth Cole and I never regret my purchase for a moment.

If you’re in Vegas and forgot to pack something nice or realize what you brought doesn’t look as good in Vegas as it did in your closet back home this is a great place to go to but beware of losing too much time walking around and being suckered into things like the Bose presentation – it’s not like you’re likely to buy a TV or surround sound system on vacation anyways so despite the draw of the Sony Store, etc resist! Plus all the walking around can get tiring, save that energy for the strip! I recommend going with a plan, have a half dozen or fewer stores you want to go to and then be efficient and try not to lose half a day which is very easy to do. And if you have a car driving is the way to go, the queuing for taxis is pretty painful even during the slow times and their free parking is just fine.

Overall the service was great, particularly in the Kenneth Cole and toy store outlets however we did receive some rather rude service at one of the shoe stores but we weren’t about to let one little jerk ruin our day, we just didn’t buy from that store.

Wayne Brady Show: Never The Same, Not To Be Missed

I’ll admit there was more music than I expected and I would have preferred a bit more comedy in it’s place but that is about the only critical thing I can say about this show. I laughed so hard I cried…repeatedly. Seriously, I almost choked to death several times I was laughing so hard – my life flashed before my eyes and it annoyed me because it got in the way of me enjoying the show! This guy pushes the limits of how much comedy the human body can handle.

I recommend getting up early one day and getting discount tickets from one of the half-priced vendors on the strip; in our case a friend of ours got up early and got the tickets himself so we could sleep in, we’re working on his nomination for sainthood.

This show was responsible for one of the best and funniest moments of the trip, one of my fondest Vegas memories in fact: when someone in the audience said something vaguely racist less than a week after Obama won the presidency Wayne didn’t even blink when he responded with “yea, that stuff’s going to end in January, you know” – my friends and I cheered, no one else did but we didn’t mind. Personally I thought it was a great line – he completely turned around what otherwise would have been an awkward moment.

As an impressionist and musician, but most notably a comedic performer, Wayne Brady delivers. His is one Vegas show almost worth making the entire trip for.

Planet Hollywood: Not At Planet Hollywood, Not Very Remarkable Either

Honestly this Planet Hollywood wasn’t particularly remarkable from any other Planet Hollywood except for the counterintuitive fact that it is not located IN Planet Hollywood the hotel – it’s in Caesar’s Palace. We knew this from our pre-trip research and I understand why this is, but its abject defiance of common sense and logic are worth remarking on.

The drinks were great, the food was fine, and the service was good for the most part although a couple requests were either ignored or forgotten but nothing to taint the experience. Much of the décor looked like it hadn’t been updated since the late 90s – I mean who would have expected a cardboard cutout of Tom Arnold staring at us while we ate? Bill and Ted were nice to see though.

Overall this was a fine place to eat and I had no serious complaints but with so many more vibrant, current, and unique alternatives in Vegas your time and money might be better spent elsewhere.

The Cheesecake Factory Caesar’s Palace: Same Great Food, A Little Cramped

We only stopped in for dessert but the food and drinks were top-notch as always. The one small criticism I could make is the ambience wasn’t quite what I had come to expect from a Cheesecake Factory – it felt a little cramped and our waitress wasn’t very attentive. Given the logistics of it being in Caesar’s Palace I can easily see why this would be, plus what kind of ambiance could you create with the Atlantis show going on out front? So if you just want the great food but aren’t out to impress anyone with service or setting then this is the place to go – I think for many the convenience of their location more than makes up for any issues with space or service.

Tournament Of Kings: Leave Your Manners At The Door And Have Fun!

We left this for our last night in Vegas and it was great fun. To truly enjoy it you have to be in the right frame of mind; leave your manners, hang-ups, and inhibitions at the door and let your inner 12-year-old out to play and you’ll have a great time.

The food was, frankly, subpar but that feeds into the realism of the whole experience – there was no Wolfgang Puck in the days of knights so accept it as a part of the experience. This is not a dinner that happens to include a show; this is a show that happens to include a dinner. This is another attraction worth visiting the half priced vendors in advance for though.

This kind of show does not seem to fit with my usual interests (Star Trek: The Experience is gone and we need to accept that until its new home is ready) but I had a great time anyways. You don’t need to be a D&D geek or historian to truly enjoy the interactive fun of this show. You shout, you cheer, you boo and they ride horses and engage in period tests of strength and skill very convincingly – beyond that I’m not going to ruin it for you. If there’s any life left in your inner child, go check this dinner show out – how much you enjoy it is entirely up to you but there’s some great fun to be had if you give it a chance.

Steve Wyrick: Fun With Magic

I had no idea who this guy was, Josh wanted to go and we were more than willing to trust his judgment. In the end it paid out, we had a pretty good time despite a delayed beginning. Apparently he’s a famous magician but not famous enough to warrant his own Trip Advisor page it would seem. I was able to figure out most of his tricks, the motorcycle one was particularly fun to figure out, but about a quarter of what he did I have absolutely no clue how he pulled it off. There was a overarching theme of familial over-sentimentality that was at times cloying, touching, and painful – and touching was in the vast minority let me tell you. I don’t want to ruin too much but what does it take to cast someone as your dead grandmother just to score some sap points?

Overall the magic was great, the entertainment value was huge, and I had a great time. As a magician and semi-comedic entertainer Wyrick is great, as a dramatist and actor he needs work. Putting aside the high-school-play-with-daddy-issues aspect this is a great show if you want to see a little magic and have your mind a bit while in Vegas (don’t try to figure EVERY trick out, it’ll really bake your noodle).

Satire As News

November 25, 2008

Yesterday I sent the following e-mail to The Huffington Post…

Why is this entry filed under politics?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/billy-kimball/obama-team-mulls-role-for_b_145788.html

Several people I know thought this was real news and the quotes all valid and correct because they trust The Huffington Post and there is nothing on your site to convince them otherwise.

Those friends of mine who are smart enough not to believe this despite it appearing in Yahoo! News (
http://news.yahoo.com/s/huffpost/20081123/cm_huffpost/145788?m) have lost faith in The Huffington Post to be a source of NEWS. Were this printed in a newspaper and not identified as satire the newspaper would no doubt be facing some lawsuits on all the false quotes and spreading false news. Satire is great, although in this instance not funny in my opinion, but if it fails to in any way identify itself as such it becomes a problem, particularly in the age of the “terrorist fist jab” in which one comment on a blog can hijack an entire news cycle from serious and pressing real issues.

I am sorely disappointed in your website regarding this and sincerely hope you take action to correct it.

Thank you for your time.

No reply yet. No sign of any corrective action either.

Review: Hoover Dam: Pretty Dam Impressive

November 24, 2008

We took the $11 power plant tour which was informative and funny and seemed a good length both in terms of time and walking. Much more than that and we would’ve needed a Red Bull, especially after all the dam free sights and walking you can do at the top. Even the dam bathrooms were interesting. Only a 40 minute drive from Las Vegas if you have the means I highly recommend it but I think having the freedom of driving there yourself rather than in a dam tour group is the way to go.

Along the way you’ll pass through Boulder which is a rather unique place all its own, with bronze statues that seem to honour, among other things, a janitor.

TV Reminder: 24: Redemption And A Colbert Christmas Tonight

November 23, 2008

So tonight you are watching the 24 TV movie from 8pm-10pm on Fox and then you’re switching over to the Comedy Network and watching A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All.

In the days that follow you will buy the DVDs.

These activities are compulsory.

You can thank me later.

For a bonus, to be as much like your favorite blogger as possible, get some stuffed crust pizzas from Little Caesars.

A Merry Redemption to all, and to all a good night!

Secret Of Mana

November 21, 2008

Welcome to the Virtual Console, Square. I know it’s not the first thing Square Enix has released on the Wii but this is the first of their fantastic RPGs from the 90s that I’ve waited for since I first heard about the Virtual Console. I just completed the game today and let me tell you it was well worth the $8 USD. I got a month of part-time enjoyment out of this game, Square knocked it out of the park with this game and I sincerely hope it sells well to further encourage other releases like Final Fantasy 2 and 3.

Review: Hard Rock Cafe Las Vegas: A Great Place Tarnished By One Bad Server

November 20, 2008

I’m a big fan of the Hard Rock Café franchise and I visit them whenever I have the chance and I’ve been to my fair share, about 8 or so, and the Las Vegas location is a unique case. Generally when you go to a Hard Rock you know what to expect and it’s equally good everywhere but when you go to the Las Vegas location it’s a bit of a gamble.

The staff attempts to do more than your run of the mill Hard Rock by dancing along to select songs, the most frequent and obvious being YMCA but the quality of the staff can vary significantly.

Last time I went 2 years ago we got a painfully pushy greeter who took the term ‘aggressively friendly’ to a whole new uncomfortable and obnoxious level, in my most recent visit we had the opposite problem.

Our waitress barely acknowledged our existence, we felt as if we were in some way boring or inconveniencing her just by placing our orders. To have such a dour and unresponsive person in such a lively place seemed rather odd. When we were looking to place our second round of drink orders she was sitting at a nearby table chatting up and hanging off of the guys there. When she eventually got around to checking in with us all the life, energy, and friendliness she lavished upon the other table was gone and the indifference had returned. Frankly her personality towards us seemed more suited to a Denny’s than a Hard Rock. When it came time for the staff to sing and dance she had to be literally pulled into participating by her coworkers and then did less than the bare minimum, glaring all the while, her distain for the whole thing painfully obvious. It seemed we really drew the short straw for service as every other person we saw was friendly, engaging, and eager to serve which is traditionally the hallmark of Hard Rock.

The food and drinks were exceptional as always although again our waitress seemed rather put upon that we would want our souvenir glasses cleaned and boxed – at a normal Hard Rock you don’t even have to ask, they’re almost like ninjas taking care of that thing before you even notice.

Overall the food and atmosphere was fantastic, our server on the other hand did all she could to drag the experience down for us.

TripAdvisor Review: Stratosphere: A Slight Decline

November 19, 2008

This was my second trip to Las Vegas and my second time staying at the Stratosphere, 2 years later almost to the day.

Unfortunately I found some things had declined in quality since my previous visit. The overall cleanliness of the place had gotten a bit worse; worn carpets and poorer ventilation on the casino floor for example. The staff was still helpful and friendly but not to the extent I experienced previously.

As for food options, Roxy’s Diner seemed to have lost some of their more capable singers and friendly personalities – one waitress in particularly seemed almost afraid of people talking to her or getting any attention, you could tell she really disliked every moment she had to sing. The buffet selection didn’t seem as good. Now granted these things were all still good in their own right, just not as good as before.

There were a couple improvements over last time, most notably there were no promoters accosting you as you walked around like 2 years ago.

I was very impressed with the lounge band, Stinger. Not only were they very capable musicians but they were also incredibly entertaining – not to mention very patient with some of the more intoxicated patrons.

We also had some service issues. We had booked a premium room with a view of the strip and had also requested a rollaway bed. We booked a month and a half in advance but it wasn’t until check-in that we were informed that a rollaway bed could not fit in the room we had booked so instead we had to accept a downgrade to a room with a very limited view out of one small window. We were not reimbursed for the difference of the downgrade. We were also not informed about the $20/day fee for the rollaway bed until check-in which is understandable but that seems like some simple information that could have been supplied on the website or in the reservation confirmation e-mail.

The toilet in our room kept clogging – 4 times in 5 days. The first time the plumber accused the maids of flushing soap down the toilet but we had already been in the room 2 days and had only used one bar of soap that was still there so this didn’t make any sense to us. The second time the plumber had to call his supervisor because he didn’t know what to do. The third time the plumber accused the previous 2 plumbers of being incompetent and blamed some new construction site for taking away most of their qualified plumbers – this plumber at least went to the trouble of replacing the entire tank on the toilet. The fourth time the plumber only spoke up long enough to make fun of us and then use the wrong name for one of his tools. We were all somewhat uncomfortable with the trend of plumbers blaming other employees for problems they themselves could not fix. The average plumber response time was about an hour and a half which multiplied by 4 occurrences was a lot of time to waste sitting around waiting instead of enjoying Las Vegas. It seemed odd to me that at no point did they offer to move us to another room even after it had happened 3 and 4 times.

We ordered Room Service one night and the quality of the food and service were both exceptional.

The rides at the top are not to be missed, they may seem simple from the pictures but they’re actually quite terrifying when you’re so high up.

$12 per day WiFi seemed a little high given there are so many free WiFi spots in Las Vegas.

Overall the Stratosphere is still a decent place to stay at a reasonable price but I doubt I will be returning.

TripAdvisor Review: Roxy’s Diner At The Stratosphere: Hit And Miss, Usually Hit

November 17, 2008

Your experience at Roxy’s can rely a lot on when you go - the personalities and singing talent of the staff varies significantly. This is a unique venue worth checking out but the food, while good, isn’t particularly noteworthy. The ambience is nice but the menu is a little limited in terms of selection.

Overall it’s a novelty worth checking out at least once.

Acronym Rant

November 16, 2008

So someone on TripAdvisor recently became confused by some acronyms some new users were using, acronyms that I was familiar with but were very uncommon to that forum. After explaining what they meant (DH = Dear Husband, DW = Darling Wife) I went on a bit of a rant…

I think these D acronyms are stupid - does it really save you that much time typing DW instead of Wife? And what’s with all the Ds? GF, BF, and SO all make sense to me as all they do is shorten a word but all these ones that start with D seem like a big fat waste of time - you add a word and then shorten it? And is it just me or does Dear Husband or Darling Wife sound just a little bit condescending/patronizing? It’s like people who go out of their way to use the most complex jargon and technical terms thinking it makes them seem smart or savvy but really they just look like idiots.

The first time I saw it was on a parenting message board my gf is on - when you’re constantly talking about family issues I can see why it might have some usefulness but why not just call everyone SO then? Or some other thing that makes some kind of intuitive sense? If you don’t stand a decent chance of being able to reason it out then it’s too complex.

I mean, really, all the time you save not typing the extra 5 letters in husband (and 2 letters in wife for God’s sake!) you’ll end up losing in the long run having to explain yourself.

Then someone told me that POV stood for Pocketbook Of Values, a coupon book for Las Vegas…

Pocketbook Of Values? Really? That’s incredibly specific. Everywhere else, like Wikipedia for example, POV is Point Of View. Why not just modify it to PBOV? That way it would be much less likely to be misunderstood. Are we so lazy that the extra letter to avoid confusion would really throw a monkey wrench into the whole thing? If so, try PBV maybe.

It’s like a Jane Austin novel where two characters have the exact same name, spelled the exact same way, but aren’t even related! Are we really this lazy and lacking in creativity?

And what’s with having to learn new acronyms for every website you go to? You’ve got to be kidding me. For one thing it’s likely to make new users feel unwelcome or out of their league - that’s no way to build a community.

Repairs

November 15, 2008

So I had the flu before I left for Vegas and pretty much with only one exception I didn’t let it keep me from doing anything although I did have to hit the Red Bull a few times. As if that wasn’t enough I drank a lot more than I’m used to and had trouble sleeping just about every single night. In fact it’s been well over a week since I got a decent night’s sleep. Anyway, as a result of all that I feel like crap now.

And despite this being the slow season for me at work I’m actually rather busy these days. Working through the backlog at work, voting in the municipal election, working the election in another city, and a hockey game is all on my plate for the next 3 days alone.

I don’t know how, when, or where I’ll find the time to rest but if I don’t get some serious rest soon I fear the results will be…messy.

Where To Begin

November 12, 2008

I returned home from my weeklong trip to Las Vegas with Jon and Josh. I posted select pictures on facebook at Mindi’s request and a bunch more pictures on myspace (which allows more pictures). But as for writing about the trip I have no idea where to begin at the moment but that is largely due to being sleep deprived and a resurgence of the flu. I actually yarfed my guts out not that long after getting home, so for my lapses I do apologize.

One thing I will mention, always looking forward, going back to Vegas for a week at the end of February would run about $533 per person for flights and accommodations at Imperial Palace. On the other hand going to DC to see Obama become president is nearly completely booked except for 2 places very far away running $1,500 to $2,200.

Why think about going back to Vegas so soon? Well this fantastic piece of news was waiting for me when I returned: The Experience is getting a new home. For details check this out:

Vegas Day 1

November 6, 2008

So we arrived in Vegas without much trouble, I only got 4 hours sleep last night so I passed out for about half an hour on the second flight. One really messed up thing on the first flight was a baby that was sucking on an unwrapped package of cigarettes. So wrong.

We had a choice of cars between a Mazda and a Pontiac G6 - I wanted the Pontiac because it looked like Jazz but Jon wanted a Mazda because he’s never driven one before and since he was the driver we let him choose. It’s not the most roomy thing in the world and doesn’t have an iPod port for music but it’s pretty nice otherwise, our luggage fit no problem.

We went to Roxy’s for dinner, the performances weren’t anywhere near as good as last time when I came with Mindi in 2006 but Jon and Josh were suitably impressed.

Then we drove around the strip and downtown at night - Jon agreed with my assessment of downtown as kinda shady.

Back at the hotel I started to feel like crap so the guys went drinking as I went to get some vitamin water and Nyquil - may my flu die sometime in the next 8 hours or so. I also went on Jon’s laptop to upload some pictures to myspace.

I Can Make The Rain Go

November 3, 2008

“I’ve got a song that I sing
I can make the rain go
Anytime I move my finger
Lucky me”

An odd dichotomy; I’ve excited about Vegas and the election but the weather is piss poor; right now its 8°C and raining in Vancouver, in Vegas its 19°C with a few clouds. According to the forecast for the first 3 days of the trip it will be 4°C to 11°C in Vancouver while we’re away while it will be 7°C to 22°C in Vegas. I think I’m already vitamin D deficient so I’m looking forward to remedying that. I suppose this is one rather expensive way to fight SAD.

I’m not as prepared as possible but I’m confident things will be fine. Trying to find a James Darren CD was the only thing on my previous To Do list that was a critical failure. Otherwise I’m doing pretty well; I even found an outlet with a Kenneth Cole pretty close to where we’ll be staying.

November’s a pretty awesome month all told; with Election Night, Las Vegas, and 24: Redemption there’s a lot to look forward to. This really is the calm before the storm. Within a few hours we will be only hours away from election results and everything will begin to move very quickly from there. At 7pm eastern tomorrow 6 states (IN, KY,VA, VT, SC, and GA) close their polls and the slipstream begins, it’s bound to be a fairly intense week from that point on.

The Real McCain

November 2, 2008

Watching SNL I found myself asking, which is the real McCain?

The McCain that has sunk to new lows every day for months?

Or the McCain who was awesome periodically for years on SNL, The Daily Show, 24, and The Tonight Show (where Jon and I saw him live)?

I apologize if this blows your mind, already had one victim before posting this.

Our Long Struggle Is Now Over

November 1, 2008

Little Caesar’s has stuffed crust, proper stuffed crust. I’ve tasted it; it’s delicious and even has a slight hint of garlic, fantastic.

Suck it Pizza Hut.

Die.

Die Die Die Pizza Hut.

Long live Little Caesar’s, in taking this groundbreaking progressive action they have earned a most honoured position – Election Night main course.

Kudos to Mindi for the discovery.
