Hancock Review

In its widely-known premise it is already a departure from several stereotypes but even within the premise it does some unique, unexpected, and refreshing things. Just when you think you’re about to sit down to some reasonably simple light-hearted Will Smith fare things take an interesting, unexpected, and unique turn that would make M. Night Shyamalan proud. Oh and Shyamalan haters can piss off, Signs was fantastic.

It’s not perfect, it’s not what you’re used to, and it’s not another ID4 or MIB and that’s okay. You keep waiting for it to fall into one of the stereotypes and it just doesn’t so once you let go of that expectation it becomes a pretty fun ride. There are many things I would have done differently but at the end of the day it’s an open mind that makes the film either good or bad in this case.

The acting is solid, the special effects do skirt the silly line a bit but given the premise and tendency for superhero media to ignore the laws of physics it does reasonably well – it doesn’t break the fourth wall but it leaves it pretty thin and shaken.

Personally I’d like to see a sequel as there are many potential storylines available.
