Incorporated Cynicism

I was thinking the other day of the catch-22 when answering questions about close political contests. Specifically if you’re in a tight race and you say you expect your opponent to do well or put up a strong fight you’re “lowering expectations” or “expectation-setting” for your own performance but on the other hand if you say you expect to win you’re overconfident or out of touch.

When did describing reality become a bad thing?

So the choice is between being a Machiavellian schemer or a cocky elitist. And they wonder why some people get turned off by the political process.
