Voyage Of The Damned Review

A friend called the other day asking for my review of the latest Doctor Who Christmas Special. Looking at my recent blog entries I notice 2 movie reviews and a follow-up to one of them. I guess I’m becoming a reviewer. Works for me.

As with most things there is a continuum, I would place Voyage Of The Damned above The Runaway Bride but below The Christmas Invasion. The Runaway Bride just had such a ridiculous villain it lost a lot of points. The Sycorax and Satsumas with a new Doctor though? That’ll be hard to ever outdo.

I liked Kylie although it really didn’t look like her at points. She had a very Rose look about her which I honestly thought they would develop into a theme, particularly the visual similarities to their final moments with the Doctor.

The Graske-looking guy was cute and funny, and the midshipman was nice. The professor who kept getting Earth details wrong was a lot of fun and made the Christmas theme almost palatable but I didn’t really feel a connection or affinity for any of the other characters. The villain however was probably the best of the Christmas specials thus far. The married couple seemed to come prepackaged.

Some aspects of the story seemed a little awkward; I got the distinct impression the end of the previous episode was written with no clear plan. Thankfully the effect of this was somewhat marginal.

Best line: “Only Britain’s Great“.

I have mixed feelings about the 80s-rock theme. I’m fairly certain I don’t like the change, hopefully it won’t be permanent.

Now the countdown to Torchwood begins.
