Trip Advisor Forum: IOA First Aid A Joke
So my girlfriend is getting strapped into the Dueling Dragons when her thumbnails gets almost completely pulled out. Blood is covering her thumb and running down her hand. We approach a ride operator and ask where the nearest first aid station is, he refuses to answer and tells us to wait without explanation. A few minutes later, somewhat impatient, we repeat our request. He tells us First Aid is coming to us and we should wait. Fine enough we figure.
20 minutes later still no sign of anyone. A ride supervisor comes along and puts us in a tiny hallway. Eventually a first aid attendant named Keith shows up, hands over 3 regular size band aids and says “here, you do it“.
“Um, would you mind inspecting the wound?” I ask.
“I was only told to bring band aids, here they are” he says.
“Well clearly this is somewhat more serious than a band aid” my girlfriend was in tears at this point, blood dripping on the ground.
“What do you want me to do?” asks Keith.
“How about First Aid?” I say “I don’t know First Aid, that’s why they called you. Do you know First Aid?”
“Yes, it’s my job” says Keith.
“Then how about doing your job?” I ask “I’m not a medical expert but I daresay a first step would be to assess the injury. Then perhaps clean the area and offer some kind of help beyond 3 band aids”
He glares at me as he grudgingly looks at the wound. He hands over a wet wipe and says “you clean it“.
We do our best to clean it and we finally convince him to wrap it. Within moments of him leaving the wrapping comes undone. We walk about for a couple minutes and find a first aid station really close to the ride which makes us wonder why it took over 20 minutes for him to respond. We go in hoping to have it redressed as the gauze was falling off only to find Keith in the station. “What more do you want me to do?” he says.
Thankfully at this point a different First Aid attendant speaks up and offers to wrap the thumb properly.
Take from my tale of woe what you will.
I was very tempted to complain to Guest Services but frankly by that point I felt that they had wasted enough of our vacation time. You have to cut your loses at some point and given what I had seen up to that point all my complaint might do is get him in trouble and perhaps improve service. A noble goal to be sure but I was less than motivated to help them out in this way. My girlfriend intends to contact them now that we’re back home to make them aware of the situation though.
The ride supervisor took down my girlfriend’s name, age, and home address on a blank piece of paper. I think that’s all they recorded until we finally found the nice fellow at the station, he seemed to fill out a proper report.
And believe me, I can appreciate this problem from both sides as I have worked at an Amusement Park for 11 years now.
Oh, and upon our return she went to see a doctor. The doctor said the thumb should have been put in a finger splint. Recovery is projected at 3 weeks minimum although in all likelihood it’ll be more like months.
