Travel Market Fluctuations
So the expedia deal lasted about 4 days, the hotels.ca deal another 4 days, and now both of them are much more expensive, in the area of $150 more per person.
But all hope is not lost. I, your faithful blogger, have found that booking directly is now the way to go. For less than $20 more per person you can get the same vacation by booking directly with the airline and hotel. Frankly I would have preferred to do that myself because I’ve done it that way before and am more comfortable with that level of control but I find comfort in the 62nd rule, “the riskier the road, the greater the profit“.
Hopefully the 48th rule, “the bigger the smile, the sharper the knife” won’t counteract the 62nd. Either way I take greater comfort from Burton’s previous Expedia expeditions. In fact it would be fair to say if it wasn’t for Burton I wouldn’t even be going on this trip. Although if we followed that line of reasoning if it wasn’t for Burton I’d probably be a penniless pauper dead in a gutter somewhere.
Seriously, without him I wouldn’t have been able to register for classes that year in Langara when he lent me his cell phone, or moved ever. The list goes on. He’s still in top running for man of the year - Jon better get his butt in gear if he wants to present a serious challenge. A good start would be offering to drive a rental car in Orlando - free shuttles are nice but we have to adhere to their schedules and they don’t go to Kennedy Space Centre.
Of course before all that he has to book his trip. He doesn’t have a Visa so that may be problematic but if he prints out prices from online and takes them in to a Flight Centre he can probably pay with debit.
What else can I do to encourage people to join us? Oh, I know. We need a theme song…
Toronto was Alanis Morrissette
Portland was Never Let Me Down by Depeche Mode
Edmonton was 54*40
Anaheim was Goo Goo Dolls
Toronto 2 was California by Wave (don’t ask)
Edmonton 2 was Family Guy
Europe was Will You Remember Me? By Michael Feinstein (yes mom, secret’s out)
Edmonton 3 was 24
Las Vegas was Everyday Is A Holiday by Esthero
Also various Seattle trips included Celebrity Jeopardy, Sarah McLachlan, Stop by Spice Girls, and Jacksoul.
So what does that leave? The temptation to use Pet Shop Boys is great but I think I need something more mainstream.
Here are some songs I’m considering…
Get It Together by Seal
Reason: Funky beat, danceable, “now’s the time for stepping out“, “love like we mean forever”
Meaning: Have fun together, make memories to last a lifetime
Drawback: Slow and irrelevant opening, repetitive
One Day In Your Life by 54*40
Reason: Rocks, “one day in your life shouldn’t be a problem…because it’s one day you might never be around here”
Meaning: You deserve a vacation and time with your friends because they won’t be here forever so seize the day
Drawback: 54*40 associated with other things, song associated with Canucks, morbid
Se A Vida É by Pet Shop Boys
Reason: Super upbeat, “come outside and see a brand new day”
Meaning: shake off dreary day-to-day life and discover a better way
Drawback: Non-English parts
Satisfied by Odds
Reason: Rocks, positive
Meaning: Life and friendship is good, enjoy both
Drawback: Encourages inaction and complacency
The Sodom And Gomorrah Show by Pet Shop Boys
Reason: Carnival-like, “Sun, sex, sin…I lived a quiet life, a stranger to champagne, I never dared to venture out to cities…the freedom and the time to play a life so easy it intrigued me when you called to say are you gonna go…it’s got everything you need for your complete entertainment”
Meaning: Try something new
Drawback: Sodomy
