BK Kid
One of my staff presses the wrong button causing a machine to lose it’s calibration. I tell another of my staff to restart the machine but she can’t find the power button so she pulls the power bar out of the wall causing the computer to reboot. I’m the only person with sufficient access to log back into the computer. The result? Going to work on my day off.
Once operation has been restored I figure I should put in a few hours to make the commute worthwhile. I go to my regular Subway at an irregular time on an irregular day to discover a lineup going out the door. So I head to the backup, BK.
Once there the kid behind the register asks me 3 times if my order is to go when I clearly said it was not in my initial order. He acknowledged the error and commented that he was tired due to lack of sleep. In a similar position myself I commiserate with the lad. He waited up until his girlfriend got home at 2am and then had to get up at 6am for work. I have a newborn, 5 days old with a voice to rival a car alarm.
He leans over and tells me he’s going to be a dad himself but he hasn’t told anyone yet. Not wanting to spill the beans to his coworkers I just say “yea, I hear ya, that’s where I was at a few months ago“. I suppose his secrecy gave me just cause not to say “congratulations” which suited me just fine. It’s not that I disagree with the sentiment but he’ll be hearing that enough in the months to come.
There’s something about large groups of people all saying the same thing that rubs me the wrong way. Maybe I just don’t like seeing people behaving like cattle, going with the herd and all that. Plus it lends itself to stereotyping and thusly seems to make it harder to be an individual. But I digress.
Once again I find it hard not to compare our situations. His girlfriend works until 2am every night and he works the cash register at BK. He’s a good kid though, he cracked a few jokes and seemed more aware than most people after a full night’s sleep. Frankly I toyed with the idea of recruiting him. He’ll make it work though.
