Slum Lord

Someone came by to see the apartment yesterday, three in fact. The landlord wasn’t able to make it so he asked me to show the apartment and he made a point of repeatedly saying “you don’t have to say anything“.

Enter the moral dilemma.

Do I tell the person the laundry list of problems like a good person but simultaneously stab my landlord in the back by sabotaging his efforts? He wasn’t the greatest landlord but he did let me leave early at only nominal expense.

There were also selfish concerns, like the harder it is to find a tenant the more of these situations I’m going to have interrupting my moving prep.

In the end I decided on a passive approach, I would answer any question truthfully but not volunteer any un-asked-for information. Unfortunately no one thought to ask about a leaking wall or mice. One person did have the presence of mind to ask about the landlord’s response time. All three people who came to see the place seemed grateful and surprised by my frank honesty.

So I guess I struck a reasonable balance.
